Watch Selma – Before Arriving at the Airport
Before the trip, we are asking all volunteers (and even families if possible) to watch the movie Selma.
The film provides important historical context and will help connect what we see and learn on the trip
to ongoing conversations about voting rights, civic engagement, and justice.
Complete the Reflection Questions – Have the answers on your Phone
After watching the film, volunteers should complete the following reflection questions.
1. How did poll taxes function as a financial barrier to voting?
2. How did requiring a sponsor prevent or discourage individuals from registering to vote?
3. Although African Americans legally had the “right to vote,” why were many African Americans in the South still denied access to this right?
